The Folk Fiesta is one of the Festival’s signature events and groups are encouraged to research their topics to ensure creative and authentic presentations.
This year the Fiesta will be divided into two (2) categories: - Village Class for villages/community councils
- Performing Class for organized and established performing companies.
The categories of competition will comprise the following: - Traditional Caribbean Folk Dance
- – a folk dance of either British or French influence e.g. Jig, Reel, Bele, Pique.
- African Nation Dance
- – Temne, Congo, Ibo, Mandig
- Traditional Folk Song
- – a Caribbean Folk Song sung in unison or harmony or a combination of both.
- Negro Spiritual
- – sung in harmony, unison or a combination of both
- Speechband
- – each band must comprise at least six (6) speechmakers, and should deliver six (6) speeches.
- Wit, humour, authenticity and costuming are the main judging criteria.
- African Drumming
- – each group is called upon to present a drumology, which should be no more than five (5) minutes long.
- The use of chants and other percussion instruments are permitted.
