Pembroke – Salaka Feast

This is an annual thanksgiving feast celebrated by the African descendants in honour of their ancestors. The predominant tribes who partake in Pembroke’s Salaka feast are the Congo, Ibo, Cromanti and Manding.

The celebrations begin with the Ancestral Awakening at 6.00a.m. followed by culinary rituals and preparation of the festival yard.

The staged production-“All Skin Teeth Nuh Laugh” tells of the inter-tribal conflicts which result from the election of a new elder. The elder-selection process is riddled by prejudice, envy and treachery. The animosity among the tribes causes bitter divisions in the community. The invitation and intervention of the ancestors through the feast restores peace to the village.
